How Long Does Kratom Stay in Your System? It Depends on These Factors

A woman sitting at a table looking at a wall calendar

Quick Answer: After a single dose, kratom can stay in your body for roughly 5 to 9 days. If you take it every day, it can stay for about 2 weeks or longer. Its effects wear off within hours, but your body takes much longer to clear it completely. How often you use it, how much you take, and how strong the product is all affect the timeline.

If you’ve recently stopped taking kratom, you may be wondering when it will finally be out of your body. Maybe you’re asking “How long does kratom stay in your system?” because of an upcoming test, or because you still feel unwell days after your last dose.

Whatever brought you here, the answer depends less on a fixed number of days than on how your body handles kratom, and on how much and how often you’ve been taking it.

How Long Do Kratom’s Effects Last?

Kratom’s effects usually begin within an hour and fade within several hours. In the 2024 study described below, mitragynine, one of kratom’s main compounds, reached its highest blood levels about 1 to 1.7 hours after a dose. After that, the levels drop slowly.

That gap is the key to this whole topic. Feeling back to normal doesn’t mean kratom has left your body. Mitragynine is processed by the liver into other substances, including 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH). Each compound leaves the body at its own pace, and that pace is measured by half-life.

What Is Kratom’s Half-Life?

Kratom’s half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a kratom compound in the blood to drop by half. A 24-hour half-life means about half remains after one day, and a quarter after two days. It doesn’t mean the compound is gone after 24 hours.

Estimates of the mitragynine half-life have grown longer as studies have improved.

  • 2015: An early human study of 10 male kratom users in Thailand estimated mitragynine’s half-life at about 23 hours. Blood was only tracked for 24 hours, so the true half-life may be longer than the study could capture.
  • 2024: A larger, controlled human pharmacokinetic study gave healthy adults measured doses of dried leaf powder, once and then daily for 15 days. The highest average half-lives were 43.4 hours after one dose and 67.9 hours after daily dosing. The study measured leaf powder only, not extracts or 7-OH products.

Together, these findings suggest that older estimates may understate how long mitragynine stays in the body. Because they came from small groups taking carefully measured doses, they’re best read as a general guide rather than a personal timeline.

Turning Half-Life Into Days: A Rough Estimate

A common rule in pharmacology is that a substance is mostly cleared after about five half-lives. Applying that rule to the study results gives a rough kratom half-life timeline:

  • Mitragynine, 2015 estimate (about 23-hour half-life): roughly 5 days
  • Mitragynine after one dose, 2024 (up to 43.4 hours): roughly 9 days
  • Mitragynine after 15 daily doses, 2024 (up to 67.9 hours): roughly 14 days
  • 7-OH from leaf after one dose (up to 4.7 hours): roughly 1 day
  • 7-OH from leaf after 15 daily doses (up to 24.7 hours): roughly 5 days

This is an estimate of how long the compound stays in the blood, not a promise about any drug test. Heavy daily use, extracts, and individual health can extend the length of time kratom stays in your system.

What Factors Affect How Long Kratom Stays in Your System?

Even two women taking the same amount can clear kratom at different speeds. Consider these relevant factors:

  • How often you use: Daily use leads to buildup. In research, mitragynine took over a week of daily dosing to level off.
  • How much you take: Larger doses mean more exposure, though the link to elimination time isn’t always straightforward.
  • Product strength: Powders, capsules, and extracts contain very different amounts of mitragynine, so “one scoop” or “two capsules” isn’t a fixed dose.
  • Your metabolism: Liver enzymes and some medications change how quickly the body can break down kratom.
  • Liver and kidney health: The liver processes mitragynine, but research hasn’t set timelines for people with liver or kidney disease.

That’s why the honest answer to how long kratom stays in your system changes from one woman to the next.

How Long Can Kratom Be Detected in Urine, Blood, or Hair?

Kratom detection time depends on the type of test, which compounds it looks for, and how sensitive it is. There isn’t enough research at this time to set an official detection window that applies to everyone.

Here’s how four testing methods compare:

  • Urine: Urine testing is the most common way to test for kratom. Specialized tests can detect mitragynine and its metabolites, but standard drug panels usually don’t look for it.
  • Blood: Blood tests are used in research and some medical or legal settings. They are most effective at identifying recent use.
  • Saliva: Very little research has examined saliva testing for kratom, and this method is rarely used.
  • Hair: Hair testing may be able to reflect longer-term kratom use, but kratom hair testing isn’t standardized.

Kratom isn’t included in most standard workplace drug screenings, so whether it shows up depends on the test ordered. For more detail, read our guide on whether kratom shows up on a drug test.

How Long Does 7-OH Stay in Your System?

In the 2024 study, 7-OH made from kratom leaf cleared faster than mitragynine, with a half-life of up to 4.7 hours after one dose and up to 24.7 hours after daily dosing. Leaf powder, however, contains only small amounts of 7-OH.

Concentrated 7-OH products, such as tablets, shots, and gummies, can deliver far more of this potent compound. They are now restricted under California’s 7-OH ban, and no human study has measured how long they stay in the body. Because they’re so potent, stopping them can be especially difficult.

Myth vs. Fact: Can You Flush Kratom Out Faster?

Myth: Drinking lots of water flushes kratom out.

Fact: Water keeps you hydrated, but it doesn’t meaningfully speed up how your liver breaks down mitragynine. Drinking too much water can be dangerous.

Myth: Detox drinks clear kratom in a day.

Fact: No detox product has been shown to speed up kratom elimination.

Myth: You can sweat it out at the gym.

Fact: Very little mitragynine leaves through sweat, and intense exercise during withdrawal can make you feel worse.

The only thing that reliably works is time, and that time varies from person to person.

If you’re thinking about stopping because of your health or dependence, our guide to quitting kratom explains what to consider before you make that change.

What If You’re Worried About Your Kratom Use?

For many women, asking “How long does kratom stay in your system?” is a way of approaching a harder question. After months or years of daily use, you may be wondering whether you can stop at all, or why your body seems to need it just to feel steady.

If that sounds familiar, you deserve care that takes your situation seriously.

FAQs: How Long Does Kratom Stay in Your System?

Can kratom pass into breast milk?

Very little research shows how much kratom passes into breast milk or how long it stays there. Newborns exposed to kratom during pregnancy have shown opioid withdrawal symptoms, so if you’ve used kratom while pregnant or nursing, talk with your baby’s doctor and your own healthcare provider.

Researchers haven’t established whether women consistently eliminate kratom faster or slower than men. Early studies, including the 2015 study mentioned above, included only men, and research on differences between women and men is still very limited. More evidence is needed to identify meaningful differences in elimination based on sex.

Research in people has shown that kratom can change how the body processes some medications. Because mitragynine lingers, that effect may continue for a while after your last dose, so it’s worth mentioning to a prescriber even if you’ve already stopped.

Possibly, but human research hasn’t established a reliable relationship between body weight, body fat, and kratom elimination. Although mitragynine is fat-soluble, there’s insufficient evidence to calculate how long it stays in someone’s system based on body composition.

You may be experiencing withdrawal symptoms as your body adjusts to lower levels of kratom. Anxiety, sleep difficulties, restlessness, and cravings can continue even as the substance is being eliminated. Our guide to how long kratom withdrawal lasts explains what to expect and when professional support may help.
