what we Treat
Eating Disorder & Body Image Treatment for Women
Eating disorder and body image usually go hand in hand. Body image refers to the way one feels and relates to their body. Women connect to their bodies in an emotional way so if a woman has a positive body image, she is more inclined to take care of herself physically, make healthier choices regarding diet and exercise, and have higher self-esteem overall.
Women can struggle with feeling good or comfortable in their skin, and this can be amplified by the physical changes that take place in early recovery. Women may focus on small imperfections or be overly critical of themselves—or other times they prefer to disconnect from their bodies paying little to no attention to physical health.
The Connection: Drug Abuse, Eating Disorder and Body Image
There is often a connection between a woman’s drug of choice and her struggles around food. Adderall, cocaine, methamphetamine, and amphetamines, for example, are substances of abuse known to suppress appetite. A result of addiction is often inconsistent, irregular eating habits and many women struggle with issues around food and healthy eating habits. Some women have a defined eating disorder that pre-dates their substance abuse and struggle to remain abstinent from associated behaviors while in treatment.
In Casa Capri Recovery’s Nutrition Program, our Therapists and Nutritionist will work with clients on becoming more accepting of themselves and their bodies. As clients become psychologically healthy, there is generally a shift in the way they view themselves and their bodies. Self-love and acceptance become a part of the recovery process replacing criticism and negative self-talk.
At Casa Capri Recovery, we know that nutrition and healthy eating habits play a large role in overall well- being and contribute to successful recovery. We also know that a eating disorder and body image problems can delay and challenge a woman’s ability to remain sober.
