what we Treat
Eating Disorder & Body Image Treatment for Women
It’s reported that 70% of women suffering from substance use disorder have a co-occurring eating disorder. At Casa Capri Recovery, we have the unique ability to treat both simultaneously, which has proven to reduce relapse rates.
Eating disorder and body image usually go hand in hand. Body image refers to the way one feels and relates to their body. Women connect to their bodies in an emotional way so if a woman has a positive body image, she is more inclined to take care of herself physically, make healthier choices regarding diet and exercise, and have higher self-esteem overall.
Women can struggle with feeling good or comfortable in their skin, and this can be amplified by the physical changes that take place in early recovery. Women may focus on small imperfections or be overly critical of themselves—or other times they prefer to disconnect from their bodies paying little to no attention to physical health.
The Connection: Drug Abuse, Eating Disorder and Body Image
There is often a connection between a woman’s drug of choice and her struggles around food. Adderall, cocaine, methamphetamine, and amphetamines, for example, are substances of abuse known to suppress appetite. A result of addiction is often inconsistent, irregular eating habits and many women struggle with issues around food and healthy eating habits. Some women have a defined eating disorder that pre-dates their substance abuse and struggle to remain abstinent from associated behaviors while in treatment.
Eating Disorder Treatment at Casa Capri Recovery- THRIVE
Our residential eating disorder program provides a monitored, contained structure during mealtimes and assists clients struggling with compensatory behaviors. Our clients are thoroughly assessed and monitored by a Registered Dietitian throughout their stay. Along with an individualized meal plan, we offer multiple experiential outings and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) meals. Using ERP, clients begin to take ownership over their recovery. Individualized care means clients work on their personal relationship with food and their bodies in a therapeutically-supervised environment.
At Casa Capri, we are devoted to treating the individual in a safe and loving community. There is no “one size fits all” approach. We know each woman that walks through our doors has a different relationship with her body and food—whether they’re suffering from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED), or avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Our wide range of modalities, including individual and group therapy, therapeutic interventions, nutrition and intuitive eating education, along with structured meals and containment from behaviors, provides a restorative environment to heal from eating disorders.
The treatment we offer isn’t just about stopping the harmful behaviors- it’s also about creating new ones. In Casa Capri Recovery’s Nutrition Program, our Therapists and Nutritionists will work with clients on becoming more accepting of themselves and their bodies. As clients become psychologically healthy, there is generally a shift in the way they view themselves. Self-love and acceptance become a part of the recovery process, replacing criticism and negative self-talk.
At Casa Capri Recovery, we know that nutrition and healthy eating habits play a large role in overall well- being and contribute to successful recovery. We also know that a eating disorder and body image problems can delay and challenge a woman’s ability to remain sober.
Top Body Image Issues in Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are often intertwined with distorted body image issues.
The top body image issues include Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. All these disorders manifest as an obsession with physical appearance, a desire to be thin, an intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted self-image.
The connections between eating disorders and body image can affect a person’s eating habits and behaviors, which can lead to serious health complications.
What Is Body Dissatisfaction?
Body dissatisfaction is a common issue that many women struggle with, which can lead to the development of bad self-image disorders. It refers to negative subjective evaluations of one’s physical body.
This could mean a woman feeling unhappy with her overall appearance, or specific parts of her body. Body dissatisfaction is often linked to societal beauty standards, which can contribute to the development of eating disorders and body image problems.
This is a pervasive issue that extends beyond just ‘discontent’; it can lead to severe emotional distress, low self-esteem, and unhealthy habits.
Can Eating Disorders Be Affected by Substance Abuse?
Substance addiction and eating disorders often co-occur. Women who struggle with eating disorders may use substances such as alcohol, drugs, or medications to cope with distressing feelings about their bodies, or to control their appetite and weight.
Substance abuse can further complicate the process of overcoming emotional eating or another eating disorder, and it’s essential to address both issues simultaneously for successful recovery.
